First off, the cover is absolutely gorgeous!!
So...this book hasn't gotten a lot of love. The ratings are quite low, so I was pleasantly surprised that I somewhat enjoyed it. I try not to read any reviews before I embark on reading a new book because that usually influences its chances of me liking/disliking it. But I do look at the ratings, and this book had particularly low ones, but I wanted to give it a shot. I can probably understand why people didn't enjoy this book. The pacing was quite slow and some parts of the book were boring. I yawned here and there. The main character seemed too perfect as well; she had an answer and a solution for almost everything.
On the other hand, I liked the plot and the settings. Soundless is such a unique YA story. I've read many books that focus on similar concepts, so this was a bit refreshing. The setting is in China on top of a mountain where boulders have separated a tiny village and its people from the rest of the world. I find the setting utterly fascinating. It was interesting to read about people and how they only grew up in such a small place with so much history but little knowledge of the outside world. Yes, I did wish there was more description...more imagery.
Soundless was definitely not the most exciting or fantastical book I've read ever, but it was interesting to read. If you're looking for something fast-paced or detail-oriented, I would stray away from this.
