I have been on a reading frenzy this week, so I’ve read a few books in a short amount of time. I decided to combine some of them in a single post, because I thought it would be more efficient. Here is a quick review of a few books that I’ve read recently.

Review

A Strong Beginning, But Disappointing Ending

gifted thief

Gifted Thief by Helen Harper

This fantasy novel had a strong beginning and I was pleased with the strong introduction. I was actually in awe of the book until I reached the ending. Unfortunately, the second half failed short. At first, the world-building, intense characters, and suspenseful plot had a lot of appeal. I was impressed with the main character and her talents. Her career and abilities created a delightful read. Towards the end though, the romance became cheesy and cliché while the story became dull and predictable. It lost all of its appeal and I was very disappointed, because I thought this book had a lot of potential. Hence, my 3-star rating.

A Thrilling And Romantic Spin on Aliens

fire in the woods

The Fire In The Woods by Jennifer M. Eaton

A Sci-Fi romance that surprised me. I thought this book would be like any other alien romance, but boy, was I wrong. The story was face-paced and never boring. The reader experiences suspense, action, and romance scene after scene. My favorite part was exploring David's alien "culture" and how he was raised. I hope the second book deals with the alien society more, because I could not get enough. I'm curious how a relationship between the two characters would work, so I guess we have to wait to see how the author will handle this. I would recommend this to Sci-Fi romance lovers.

Cute Romance With Cute Characters

Playing the player

Playing The Player by Lisa Brown Roberts

YA contemporary book with a cute romance. Slade was the typical YA love interest. He's the laid-back, care-free womanizer with a hidden heart. Trina is the uptight, anal perfectionist with a secret. The romance was a little cliché, but it gradually evolved from hating each other to a deeper relationship. What sets this book apart from other romance novels are the kids that they have to babysit together. Max and Gilly are a babysitter's nightmare, but they certainly keep it entertaining and at some points humorous. There is some emotional backstory but it's not discussed much and I think it would have been better if it was. Overall, this is a typical YA romance novel.

It's been a busy week, but I'm not complaining. I've got another huge haul of book reviews so stay tuned!
